Urban Design Group recently completed the design of the Hollywood Casino in Perryville, MD. Located at the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay, the site reclaimed a gravel mine for the 101,000 SF facility which houses 1,500 video lottery terminals (VLTs). The property is owned by Penn National Gaming. UDG served as the architect of record and provided master planning and architectural design services. UDG worked closely with the Construction Project Manager, Cianbro Corp., and coordinated the efforts of the interior design firm, Genesis Associates.

Urban Design Group incorporated Penn National Gamings Hollywood theme, with its 1930s art deco look, throughout the project. A porte-cochere, decorative vertical pilasters and accent lighting compliment the exterior. The project also included the design of a 25,490 SF pre-engineered building which is connected to the casino to house administrative offices and additional support spaces.

We enjoyed designing the Hollywood Casino in Perryville and appreciate our ongoing relationship with Penn National Gaming, said Donald C. Buenger, AIA, LEED AP, Principal with UDG. The Perryville Casino presented some unique challenges, yet through close collaboration, we successfully met the original schedule and brought the project in on budget. We are proud our project team helped convert a former gravel mine into a world-class entertainment destination that will provide jobs and spur economic growth for Marylands Chesapeake Bay area.

The project included the design of two dining establishments, the Epic Buffet, which seats 150, and the walk-up Extras Grill. The interior design of the casino incorporates the Hollywood brand with decorative columns, art deco wall castings, nostalgic movie images, as well as incorporates the latest electronics to animate the casino such as using a Daktronics reader board sign, and adding theatric accent lighting.

Important to many casino visitors is the smoking policy. UDG worked closely with the State of Maryland to develop exterior smoking porches that complied with state clean air laws. Exterior secured areas are accessed directly from the casino and provide benches, electronic information screens and infrared ceiling heaters to make the exterior space comfortable during winter.

The $ 39 Million project budget included site development, building construction and interior theming. The projects total design and construction schedule was 18 months, however construction was delayed by a month due to site remediation issues. UDG worked with Cianbro to streamline design, communication, decision making and procurement to still meet the original opening date requested by the client.

On Thursday, Feb. 16, HNTB Corporation held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new office located at 130 East Travis St. The office will house the firms 41 professional engineers, environmental scientists, planners, public involvement representatives and support staff.
